The Greenbean: MK2 Perfection

When you ask the owner of a heavily modified car what his favorite part of their car is, you usually get the answer of some rare or expensive part that builds on the original car. When asked the same question, Ben responded with “It has nothing do with any of my rare parts or "race car parts" or go fast bits. It's simply the MK2 platform.... I love how it feels to drive, the sounds, the smells, the creaks, and how it makes me feel 16 years old every time I climb in”. This is a car Ben has owned for 20 years and knows inside and out. Hand built in his garage, “next to the lawn mower and some garden tools” as he put it in his email.

I ran into Ben’s car at the Eurowerks ‘17 show in Minneapolis and it immediately stood out from the crowd. Trailered up from Kansas for this show, although Ben insists it's no trailer queen. Up until two years ago he drove it to every show he attended including some long distance trips to San Francisco, Texas, New Jersey (twice), and Chicago (twice). He has decided to allow himself to trailer the car to enjoy the comfort of his truck on the long distances to shows now, but still smokes the tires and redlines shifts every time he leaves the garage because “that's how MK2's are meant to be driven.”

Painted back in 2003, this beautiful custom green paint job still shines for being 14 years old. Brad Umscheid of Paints Unlimited in Salina, KS laid down the bright green Sikkens paint in his home garage before he opened up his shop and becoming the huge custom hot rod builder he is today. Brad even shaved the engine bay on the MK2 in 2003 before it became a popular thing to do. Originally Ben had the car painted with a cheap 70’s Porsche lime green when he first had the car in the late 90’s.

This car doesn’t just look good, it has enough motor to really move the light chassis of the MK2. Built by Kevin Antaki of Antaki Motor Works out in the Bay Area, California the 2.0L 16V Turbo motor put down 300whp @17psi. Just like the rest of this car the power-train was built at a home garage. Kevin put this engine and wiring harness together for Ben in his carport. Kevin is a well known Volkswagen engine builder, currently taking the internet by storm with a AWD 4.2L Audi V8 swapped into his blue MK2 GTI. See more of his work on Instagram @gtikev.

With most of his parts hoarding done in the late 90’s this GTI is a true time capsule. Everything was conceived by Ben, researched, hand polished, fabricated, made to fit, or ruined as he try to do as much as he could at home. Check out his complete mod list below.
